Periodic and consistent maintenance will save your business the frustration and hassle of backpack sprayers not functioning optimally due to a lack of care. A detailed and reliable maintenance program can keep your backpack sprayer working for several years; however, it is often overlooked. If you are having issues with your backpack sprayer (pressure, flow, spray pattern, etc.), try giving the sprayer a clean as often enough, that is all that is needed.
Here are some of our top tips for maintaining your backpack sprayer:
- Disassemble & Clean - At the end of each spraying season or at least once per year, it is recommended you disassemble your backpack sprayer and thoroughly inspect and clean the inside. During your inspection, you should be looking for loose or worn parts and connections. By completing this yearly, you can mitigate any downtime for your business.
- Clean the Foot Valve - Before each use, clean the foot valve filter located at the bottom of each tank. This is the single most important task that you can do to increase the longevity of the backpack sprayer’s pump. By consistently cleaning the sprayers foot valve, you prevent debris from reaching the diaphragm pump and clogging the pumps valves. Additionally, by cleaning the foot valve, you are ensuring that the diaphragm pump is getting enough liquid to keep the pump and the sprayer operating optimally.
- Clean the Outside Tank - Clean the outside of the sprayer once a week or as needed. Your business’s image is important to your customers and any potential clients. A clean piece of equipment represents a business that cares which resonates with your customers and is safer for you and your employees to handle.
- Clean Inside the Tank - After each use or as needed, rinse the backpack sprayer tank to get rid of any excess product from the tank and dispose of the waste in accordance with your local laws.
- Clean the Pump - Once rinsing the sprayer with water, it is a good practice to also clean the sprayer’s pump with warm, possibly soapy water. The pump is the heart of the sprayer and maintaining it will increase the useful life of the backpack sprayer especially when using harsh chemicals. If you decide to use a soapy solution, be sure to rinse the sprayer with warm water to rid of any soap in the sprayer plumbing. Like item number 4 – dispose of the waste in accordance with your local laws.
- Maintain a Backpack Sprayer the Nozzles - Lastly, clean the nozzles to remove any dirt or debris that may have collected. You can do this with water and a gentle brush or pointed object. Avoid using metal to clean your tips as this may cause damage to the tip.
